United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's Nuclear Disarmament Plan
On United Nations Day 24 October 2008 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released a five point plan for nuclear disarmament calling primarily on governments to negotiate a treaty or package of treaties to prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons. The plan was immediately supported by former Republican Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Mohammed El Baradei (Secretary-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency).US President Obama has been active in implementing several of the other proposals in the five-point plan, including chairing a special session of the UN Security Council, resuming negotiations with Russia on stockpile reductions and starting multilateral negotiations on a treaty banning the production of fissile (bomb-making) materials. The plan has also been supported by the Inter-Parliamentary Union which represents over 150 democratic parliaments around the world. However, most other governments have been slow to support Mr. Ban Ki-moon's plan.
Action idea: Contact your local parliamentarian and/or your foreign minister to encourage them to support the UN Secretary-General's plan.
