How can you contribute to Nuclear Disarmament?

Youth is the vice of the future. Let’s make efforts to create a more peaceful world and to get nuclear weapons banned before it is too late!

Below you can find helpful tips and suggestions on how you could contribute to the cause of nuclear disarmament.

International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapon (ICAN)

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) aims to gather citizen and government support for negotiations on a Nuclear Weapons Convention. A Nuclear Weapons Convention would prohibit the production, testing, possession and use of nuclear weapons. ICAN gives several suggestions on how you could take action from which we selected a few:

Sign the ICAN petition and ensure that your family and friends also sign it. This petition calls upon all countries to start the negotiation on a legally binding Nuclear Weapons Convention. You can also download a printable version of the petition so you can collect signatures on the streets. In this way you are helping to create a better and more peaceful world!

Write to your politicians/representatives in order to help put nuclear abolition on the political agenda. Ask your politicians to become a member of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, which is a non-partisan forum fo parliamentarians, nationally and internationally, to share resources and information, develop cooperative strategies and engage in nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament issues, initiatives and arenas. You can write your own letter/email or you can send a sample letter/email which you can find here.

Screen a film on nuclear abolition at your school/university or at your recreation/sports club in order to increase awareness of the damaging effects of nuclear weapons.

Organize a flash mob to attract attention for the cause of nuclear abolition. This is fun and effective as your message reaches many people, in the streets but also on the internet as often such flash mobs are being filmed by bystanders. View the video for an example of an effective flash mob.

Collect video pleas for a nuclear weapon free world on the streets and upload them on www.millionpleas.com.

Lobby for abolition through writing a letter to a newspaper. Almost all newspapers have a “letters page” where letters from readers are published. ICAN writes that this is a very effective method of taking action because “politicians know that for every letter they receive there are at least another 1,000 voters who feel the same. In lobbying them, the idea is to take up their time and head space - get them working for you. On the ICAN website you can read how to write a letter to a newspaper.
