New Zealand second most peaceful country

Check out theĀ  Global Peace Index interactive map showing the ranking of the most peaceful countries in the world. After having been the most peaceful country for two consecutive years, New Zealand got dumped to the second place behind Iceland in 2011.

The reason for this drop has been a deterioration of three of the 23 indicators of the Global Peace Index. First, there was an increase in the number of internal security officers. Second, New Zealand’s prison population rose to 203 per 100,000, a number that is significantly higher than most other developed countries. Third, there was an increase in the number of external conflicts fought by New Zealand abroad.

Overall, New Zealand has always ranked in the top five of the Global Peace Index over the past five years. Moreover, our country has been considered to perform exceptionally in all of the structures of peace and has shown that ethnic and linguistic diversity does not necessarily have a negative impact on levels of peace.

The country ranking lowest in the Global Peace Index, thus being the least peaceful country in the world, is Somalia. Somalia has been labeled as a ā€œfailed stateā€, which means that the state has failed to fulfill certain basic conditions and responsibilities. There is a certain deficiency of control over the territory and a loss of monopoly on physical force therein. Several groups are competing for power and basic public services for the population are not sufficiently provided for.
