Religions For Peace launch Global Youth Disarmament Campaign
Â
On 7 November 2009, Costa Rican President and Nobel Peace laureate Oscar Arias launched Arms Down - a worldwide campaign to transfer military spending towards development needs - and a Global Youth Disarmament Campaign. The campaign, led by religious youth, engages and assists other youth to advance shared security by working to abolish nuclear weapons, reduce conventional weapons, promote inter-religious understanding, and to reallocate military spending to support urgently needed development, as set forth in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). New Zealand was represented at the launch by Areti Metuamate and Alyn Ware.
