Inaugural “Me Rongo” Peace Congress and Festival (November 11th - 13th 2011)

Peace, Sustainability and Respect for the Sacred

The main objective of the Congress is to gather peacemakers together in order to draft a Rekohu Peace Declaration based on principles of peace, sustainability and respect for the sacred. A critical part of this declaration will be a synthesis of conflict resolution methods, particularly those of indigenous peacemakers, discussed at the Congress.

Me Rongo is a Moriori term meaning “in peace”.

Moriori, the hosts of the island, have a six hundred year unbroken peace tradition. It is seen as being a code of living and engagement that has the capacity to inspire. The vision for the Peace Congress is to create a meaningful and lasting practice of mindfulness amongst who attend.

A Peace and Sustainability Festival will precede the Congress. This will include 10 days of workshop facilitated by local and international leaders in the fields of sustainability, creative arts, writing and respectful practices.
