Urgent: Nuclear abolition support letters needed

A reminder that letters of support for the iCAN ANZ petition to parliament need to be with us by the end of this week (or on Monday, 19 March at the very latest) - if your organisation is sending a letter of support (information and guidelines are included below), and you have not already sent it to iCAN ANZ, can you kindly reply as soon as possible and let us know when we will be receiving it? Thank you

Urgent: NZ parliament / iCAN ANZ petition, support needed

Dear iCAN folk,

This message is to let you know that the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons Aotearoa New Zealand (iCAN ANZ) petition will be considered by a cross-party parliamentary Select Committee in March. The petition calls on the New Zealand government to actively engage with like-minded governments committed to abolishing nuclear weapons to launch, without delay, an initiative to start the process of negotiating a Nuclear Weapons Convention - a copy of the petition text is attached for your convenience.

Although the Select Committee has not called for public submissions, iCAN ANZ can provide letters of support from other organisations as supporting evidence, and we are therefore writing to ask if your various organisation will kindly send a letter of support?

If you are able to do this, please refer to the details in the below, thank you.

Letters of support need to be sent to iCAN ANZ email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 15 March at the latest - please note that letters have to be sent via iCAN ANZ rather than directly to the Committee because this is not a public submission process. We will submit all letters received as supporting evidence, and we will also prepare a summary of the main points in the supporting letters for Committee members.

Your letter must be on headed paper (with full contact details), and addressed to:

Mr John Hayes, MP
Chairperson,
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee,
House of Representatives,
New Zealand

Please put a heading at the top saying: Letter of support for Petition No. 2011/1

If you like, you can also add the description, although it isn't necessary, which is: That the House of Representatives urge the Government to engage with like-minded governments committed to abolishing nuclear weapons to start a process of negotiating a nuclear weapons convention without delay.

Generally letters of support begin with "Dear Mr Hayes and Committee members" and have a brief introductory paragraph with details of the organisation’s aims, membership and structure.

It would be really helpful if your letter focuses on two main points: why it is important for the New Zealand government to take a leading role in this (this is crucial, it is after all a New Zealand parliamentary Select Committee considering the petition); and why a Nuclear Weapons Convention is necessary.

It is useful to begin with a brief summary of your position and recommendations, with more detail on each providing the bulk of the letter. Your recommendations can also be restated in the concluding paragraph.

Letters should ideally be no more than two A4 sides in length (Select Committee members have huge amounts of reading, so focused letters are appreciated!). Rather than providing lengthy appendices, if you do wish to refer to longer documents such as reports, it is better to list them with a url so that Committee members can look them up if they wish. If there is any document you think it would be particularly useful for the Committee to have, please send it to iCAN ANZ and we will provide a copy to each Committee member.

If you would like to appear before the Committee, your letter needs to say that you would like the opportunity to speak to the Committee (please note that this is unlikely because public submissions have not been called for, but we may be able to arrange a video link or further hearings).

Please be aware that letters to any Select Committee form part of the public record of parliament, so if there is anything in your letter that you do not wish to have publicly available, you need to say so in the letter.

Finally, if you have any questions about the Select Committee, this process or your proposed letter, please do not hesitate to contact us.
