Appeal to Prime Minister John Key:

Don’t drop the nuclear disarmament ball!

cartoon

Hon John Key

Prime Minister

Dear Mr. Key,

We urge you not to drop the nuclear disarmament ball!

Please uphold New Zealand's commitment to being nuclear free. We thank the New Zealand parliament for pledging its support of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s proposal to start work on a global treaty to abolish nuclear weapons.  We ask that you be a leader on the road to nuclear abolition.

Nuclear weapons must be abolished in this generation – or they could destroy us.

Yours sincerely,

Nukes News

The issue of nuclear disarmament has a strong history in New Zealand in particular.  In 1987, parliament passed the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act, making it the first Western-allied nation to legislate towards a nuclear free zone.

BANG Aotearoa wants to spread this kiwi spirit across the globe, making nuclear disarmament a worldwide value.  Our BANG branch was inspired by the 2010 Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty Review Conference.  We feel that this is a perfect opportunity for the world to move forward with our vision of nuclear abolition.

Below you will find a variety of links and short pieces with history and updates on the trail of nuclear disarmament:

BANG is an international organization.  Check out the activities of BANG USA and BANG Europe.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a global grassroots movement for total nuclear disarmament through a legally binding and verifiable Nuclear Weapons Convention. Such a treaty would ban the production, testing, use and possession of nuclear weapons, and establish a timeframe for their elimination. A model convention prepared by non-government organisations has the endorsement of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Global Zero:  The international Global Zero movement launched in December 2008 includes more than 200 political, military, business, faith and civic leaders – and hundreds of thousands of citizens – working for the phased, verified elimination of all nuclear weapons worldwide.

International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War is a non-partisan federation of national medical organizations in 62 countries, representing tens of thousands of doctors, medical students, other health workers, and concerned citizens who share the common goal of creating a more peaceful and secure world freed from the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Project for Nuclear Awareness is a US based organization campaigning for the elimination of nuclear and space weapons as well as promoting the enforcement of treaties and agreements about nuclear issues.

A Debate of Ballistic Proportions!

Join us for the inaugural student-run debate on nuclear disarmament in commemoration of the bombing of Hiroshima and marking the 25th anniversary of David Lange's address to the Oxford Union.

WHEN:  Tuesday, 3 August, 7:00pm
WHERE:  University of Auckland Business School, Lecture Theatre 260 098

Moot: "This house believes the abolition of nuclear weapons is a pipe-dream"

Negative:
Jacinda Ardern (Member of Parliament, Labour Party)
Max Harris (president of the UoA Deating Society)
Lyndon Burford (postgraduate student, completing a PhD on disarmament issues)

Affirmative:
Treasa Dunworth (public international law lecturer, LLB(hons), LLM (Harvard))
Curwen Rolinson (undergraduate student, Law and Asian Studies)
Akif Malik (executive member, UoA Debating Society)

Twenty-five years ago, David Lange astonished New Zealanders and the world by arguing the proposition that "nuclear weapons are morally indefensible". Since then, the appetite for nuclear arms has been increasingly suppressed by calls for global disarmament. With Obama and Medvedev concluding a treaty to further downsize their nuclear arsenals, as well as a growing number of states calling for the elimination of nuclear arms, the world appears to be making positive progress towards disarmament. But, can the human race completely liberate itself from the grip of nuclear arms? Is the total abolition of nuclear weapons a mere pipe-dream? Come and find out. Questions and answers will follow the debate.

This event is brought to you by AUSA Internatioanl Affairs Office, the United Nations Youth Association of NZ, and The Peace Foundation.
